Did you know that the average asphalt shingle roof lasts around 20 years? It’s true! It’s likely that you’ll need to replace your home’s roof at some point of you living there.

You don’t want to wait too long to get new roofing material because it’s what protects your home from potential damage.

Here are 8 clear signs you need a new roof or roof repair in Ohio.

1. Leaking

If there is a large and obvious leak, the odds are that you’ll find it right away. Unfortunately, some leaks can be subtle and often hard to notice.

Frequently check for water stains in your ceiling. Other signs of water leaking through your roof are mold or wood rot.

Keep in mind that small water spots might be evidence of a larger problem underneath your roof.

2. Look for Problems with Exterior Paint and Walls

When you have time, look at the area where the roofline meets the exterior walls of your house. If your roof is bad, you can often see damage along this transition line. It might even distort the paint or siding of the home as well.

3. Shingles That Change Shape

Occasionally, asphalt shingles can change shape over time. This is a sign that you need to start replacing the shingles, or that you need to completely redo your roof.

Check your whole roof for signs of cracking, bending, discoloration, breaking, or curling to the individual shingles.

4. Keep Track of the Age of Your Roof

While roofing materials like slate and metal might last upwards of 50 years, a traditional asphalt shingle roof generally lasts around 20 years.

If you purchase a pre-existing home, make sure you know the age of the current roof. This will help you gauge when you need to have a professional out to look at it.

5. Evidence of Moss

Moss growing on your roof is not a good sign. This means that there is an excess of moisture building up on your roof.

The moss will also retain even more moisture close to the roof, which will only make the problem worse and cause further damage.

6. Missing Shingles Mean That You Need a New Roof

It’s normal to have a few shingles start to fall out as your roof ages. If so many shingles blow off that you start to notice patches missing from the street, it’s time to consider investing in a new roof or a repair job.

7. Outside Debris Appear Inside Your Home

A roof with a hole can result in outside debris such as branches, leaves, and dirt getting blown inside your home.

This means that you need a repair to your roof as soon as possible. If not, it’s possible that the problem can get worse and even have wildlife getting inside as well.

8. Loss of Granules

Even if your shingles aren’t coming off completely, they will need a replacement if they lose too many of the individual granules that cover the shingle.

Old age and sunlight will cause the shingles to deteriorate and break off into many small bits and pieces.

You can find these granules starting to clog up your gutters if the problem is really bad.
