The City of Lima, Ohio
Lima, Ohio was incorporated in 1831 by John Allen, who is the namesake for Allen County, where Lima resides. Lima is also the seat of Allen County.
With a population of almost 40,000, (38,771 at time of the last census in 2010) Lima is one of the largest cities in the area along with Findlay, Ohio.
The City derives is name (reportedly) from Lima, Peru. The story goes that during the 1800 Peru was a major source of quinine, which was a very important anti-malarial drug at the time. Lima, Ohio was located in the region of the Black Swamp and so the city was named in honor of the source of the much-needed quinine.
One of Lima’s most well-known historical figures is Benjamin C. Faurot. A local businessman, Faurot drilled for natural gas at his paper mill, but imagine his surprise to find oil instead of gas! This kicked off the area’s oil boom, which spawned many boomtowns and brought Rockefeller’s Standard Oil to the area. Believe it or not, for almost a decade Lima’s oil field was the biggest in the country.
Today Lima is very well known for the Lima Army Tank Plant. Built in 1941, it is the sole producer of the M1 Abrams tank and creates a lot of jobs in the area.
Lima is also home to the “Lima A-1”, a locomotive built starting in 1925 by Lima Locomotive Works. This is a model that became the prototype for the modern steam locomotive.
Kewpee Hamburgers is a Lima-area treat that cannot go unmentioned. The are the burger with the “pickle on top makes your heart go flippity flop”, as the slogan goes. If you’re ever in the area make sure to save time for a Kewpee burger. Get the “special” or custom order it your own way. There are a ton of varieties and locals have their own special secret ways of ordering, so ask around what everyone’s favorite is.
Sone prominent people that hail from Lima include Phyllis Diller (actress & author), Al Snow (wrestler), Al Jardine (founding member of The Beach Boys), William Alfred Fowler (Nobel Prize for Physics).
