The City of Wapakoneta

A little bit about the fine City of Wapakoneta, where we’ve offered our roofing contractor services for a very long time.

Wapakoneta was incorporated in 1849 and is currently the home to almost 10,000 people. (Wapakoneta had a recorded population of 9,867 according to the last census in 2010.)  Wapakoneta is the county seat of Auglaize County and boasts a beautiful City Hall.

Perhaps Wapakoneta’s greatest claim to fame is being the hometown of the first man to set foot on the Moon in the modern era: Neil Armstrong. Wapakoneta celebrates this history every year with their Summer Moon Festival.

Wapakoneta also has a rich native America history. Home to the Shawnee tribe and Chief Blackhoof (also known as Catahecassa), Wapakoneta was home to more than 500 native Americans by 1808. Chief Blackhoof worked hard to get the Indians to accept the white man’s culture and begin integrating into it rather than resort to warfare.

Wapakoneta was also home to the very 1st sawmill and gristmill in northwest Ohio. What else was Wapak known for? Butter churns. That’s right, Wapakoneta was the butter churn “capital” with at least 2 companies “churning” them out. (That would be the M. Brown & Company and the Standard Churn Company.

Wapak also sports a cute and charming downtown area with many old buildings that have kept up the facades very nicely. There are lots of little antique shops and great shopping in general. Lots of stuff to explore! Check out the Downtown Wapakoneta Partnership which focuses on helping the downtown area grow.

We’d be remiss to not point out the famous (or maybe not-so-famous) Wapakoneta Rock Garden and Temple of Tolerance. An awesome sight to behold yet hidden in a backyard, the evidence of this hidden gem can be seen from what appears to be an overgrown front yard.

But the overgrowth is planned. A windy trail covered by vines seems like a spooky entrance to a haunted house. The creaky old metal fence adds to the ambience. But, weaving your way through the twisting maze, you spot treasures along the way. They’re not “junk” but perhaps ancient artifacts, each with it’s own unique story.

If you keep going, you eventually break out into an open area with a collection of huge rocks in the center. That’s the Temple of Tolerance: a dedication for all people to come together and be accepting of one another. Weddings are held here, and bonfires are made for people to play music long into the night. It’s truly a magical place and what feels like the heart of Wapakoneta.
